Less than an hour after stablemate Govenor Charlie finished up the track in the G1 Preakness S. at Pimlico on 5/18, this son of 1999 Belmont Stakes champ Lemon Drop Kid ran himself into consideration for the final leg of the Triple Crown with a dominating undercard allowance victory for 3-year-olds and upward. In winning the 1 1/16m Pimlico nightcap, Code West settled off the pace in 4 th early, advanced on the far turn and took charge in upper stretch before pulling away to a 6 ¾-length win. Prior to his Baltimore romp, trainer Bob Baffert briefly flirted with entering him in the G1 Kentucky Derby but wisely settled on a Churchill Downs optional claiming event on the 1 st Saturday in May, in which the ridgling missed by a neck as the heavy favorite.
